Apple supplier Largan expects triple-camera demand from other OEMs to boom

If it hasn’t felt like the triple-camera smartphone phenomenon has hit you between the eyes, get ready to feel the full brunt of it coming up — at least that’s what one components maker is betting on.

Taiwan-based Largan Precision, a major Apple partner supplying optics to iPhone cameras, has reportedly spent more than US$91 million last month acquiring land for up to 21,000 square meters of production space. Digitimes reports that the company has made four property purchases since July 2017.

The company reported a 20 percent drop in revenues and profit last quarter thanks to depressed iPhone sales, but is preparing to pick up more orders from Chinese smartphone companies like Huawei, OPPO and vivo. Samsung is also said to be a target.

Largan is adapting new products to 3D depth-sensing cameras and optical fingerprint sensors underneath displays while scaling up production of conventional triple-camera setups with different focal lengths in mind.
